I found this while looking at artist resources online…. Harlan Ellison is talking about writers, but I think it applies to all creative people. We don’t do ourselves any favours by doing stuff for free – people start expecting it and then it gets harder and harder to get paid. I’m not saying you should never volunteer for everything, but never volunteer for anything that’s not valuable to you in some specific way. I can’t remember where this is from (do you know?), but, “there’s nothing creatively rewarding about not getting paid.”
