Welcome to our Official 2011 Gushul Studio Residency Blog!
We are Latifa Pelletier-Ahmed and Jennifer Akkermans, two emerging artists invited to spend the month of September here in the Gushul Studio in Blairmore, sponsored by Trap/Door Artist Run Centre, in Lethbridge. We are both very excited to have the opportunity, and are curious to see what comes out of it! I (Jen) am staying in the Studio, and Latifa is staying in the cosy Writer’s Cottage, but we will be collaborating, and working together mainly in the studio.
Anyway, I guess I will tell you a little about myself. I grew up in Hanna, but have spent the last five years in Calgary, attending the Alberta College of Art + Design. I just graduated from ACAD’s Fibre program in May. My regular artist practice involves making a certain kind of imaginary creatures (which I call the Morphoids), and studying them as if they are real. (If you’re interested, you can see exaclty what I mean on the Institute of Morphoid Research’s website, at www.InstituteOfMorphoidResearch.com.) Anyway, I guess if you’d like to learn more about me, you can check out my regular blog and website at jenniferakkermans.com I am very excited to be here and to see what Blairmore has in store for us.
I’ll let Latifa introduce herself when she gets a chance.
